Say yes in Ribe. In the old town hall, a hundred metres from the cathedral.

You marry in the Borgersalen of a town hall dating from before 1496, in the heart of Denmark's oldest town. Afterwards we set off on foot, across the cathedral square, through the cobbled lanes and down to the Ribe Å. I have photographed weddings here and walked these paths with my couples, so I know every corner.

  • Danish, German or English
  • Around 60 seats in the hall
  • Photo spots just a few minutes' walk away

What you need to know about Ribe

Ribe belongs to Esbjerg Municipality. You apply to Familieretshuset, the Danish Agency of Family Law. Once you are approved, you contact the municipality's wedding office and receive your date.

Venue

Det Gamle Rådhus, Von Støckens Plads. Ceremonies take place in the Borgersalen. There are a few steps at the entrance, with a ramp and a second entrance for wheelchairs.

Ceremony days

For couples approved by Familieretshuset, Thursdays and selected Fridays, always in the morning between 10am and 1pm.

Language

Danish, German or English. If you don't understand any of the three, bring an authorised interpreter.

Witnesses

Two are required. At the town hall, the municipality provides them on Thursdays on request. If you bring your own, send their names and addresses at least one week before.

Guests and a toast

Around 60 seats. A glass after the ceremony is possible; bring your own glasses and drinks. Confetti, rice and artificial flowers are not allowed in or outside the town hall.

Another venue

Outdoors is possible too, for example at Slotsbanken or Kammerslusen, on any weekday by arrangement. In that case there is a fee, and you bring two witnesses of your own.

As of October 2026, without guarantee. Please check the pages of Esbjerg Municipality and Familieretshuset.

Skibbroen

The old quay with wooden ships and the storm flood column, a few minutes' walk away.

Slotsbanken

The green mound of the old castle with the statue of Queen Dagmar. A good ten minutes on foot.

Kammerslusen

A lock on the dyke, wide marshland and views of the Wadden Sea. About a quarter of an hour by car.

Questions

What couples ask about Ribe

How do I get my date in Ribe?

Only once you are approved by Familieretshuset. Then you write to Esbjerg Municipality's wedding office and receive your date.

Is a Saturday possible?

For couples approved by Familieretshuset, the municipality names Thursdays and selected Fridays. For a Saturday, it's best to ask the wedding office directly.

How far is Ribe from Flensburg?

About 90 kilometres, roughly an hour and a quarter by car.

What if the municipality gives us a different date?

Then you move your photo booking free of charge, as long as I'm free on the new day.

What if the weather doesn't play along?

The lanes are narrow and the houses low, so photos work well even on a windy day. And rain gives the pictures a mood all of their own.

Can I get married in Esbjerg instead?

Ribe belongs to Esbjerg Municipality. Couples approved by Familieretshuset are married at the old town hall in Ribe, not in Esbjerg.
