You marry in the old council chamber on Torvet, looking out across the palace lake to Gråsten Palace, half an hour from Flensburg and just over the border. Afterwards we walk to the palace gardens or down to the harbour, just as I did with one of my couples here.

Gråsten ♡What you need to know about Gråsten
Gråsten belongs to Sønderborg Municipality. You apply to Familieretshuset, the Danish Agency of Family Law, and the municipality's wedding office gives you your date.
Venue
Det Gamle Rådhus, Torvet 8. The town hall of 1954 is now a hotel with a restaurant, and ceremonies take place in the former council chamber. There is parking by the building.
Ceremony day
For couples from abroad, Fridays between 8:30am and 2pm. On Saturdays the municipality only marries Danish couples, and then in Sønderborg.
Appointment the day before
On the Thursday before your wedding, you both go in person to Citizen Service (Borgerservice) in Sønderborg, between 9am and 5pm. Without this appointment, the ceremony will not take place.
Witnesses
Two are required. On Fridays in Gråsten, the municipality provides both.
Lead time
In October 2026, the next free Friday was a good three months away. Your approval from Familieretshuset is valid for four months.
Another venue
Only by arrangement with the wedding office, and then with witnesses of your own.

The royal family's white summer residence, about ten minutes' walk from the town hall.
Palace gardens
Wide lawns, woodland and ponds. When the royal family is in residence, usually in high summer, the gardens are closed.
Palace lake
The water between the town hall and the palace, with the palace as a backdrop.
Harbour
The small marina on Nybøl Nor, a few minutes' walk away.
Alnor Strandpark
A beach on the Flensburg Fjord, about five minutes by car.
Torvet
The market square right outside the town hall, for congratulations and the group photo.
What couples ask about Gråsten
Why do I have to go to Sønderborg on the Thursday?
The municipality requires you both to appear in person at Citizen Service the day before the ceremony. So plan the Thursday in; Sønderborg is about twenty minutes from Gråsten.
Is a Saturday possible?
Not in Gråsten. On Saturdays the municipality only marries Danish couples, and that at Sønderborg town hall.
Can we take photos in the palace gardens?
Yes, when the gardens are open. When the royal family is in residence, usually in high summer, they are closed. Then we go to the palace lake or the harbour instead.
How far is Gråsten from Flensburg?
About 25 kilometres, roughly half an hour by car.
What about Sønderborg itself?
Gråsten belongs to Sønderborg Municipality. Couples from abroad are married on Fridays in Gråsten or at Nørherredhus in Nordborg, not at Sønderborg town hall.
